His formal education is in philosophy and social anthropology (University of Paris).
After a research assignment at the French National Centre for Scientific Research, joins the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) (HQ in Paris). He held several positions, in particular Director of the Bioethics Programme, Senior Director of the Division of the Ethics of Science and Technology, Secretary-General of the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) and Executive Secretary of the World Commission of the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST). He was also the Rapporteur of the IBC Drafting Group of the International Declaration on Human Genetic Data (adopted in 2003).
Presently he is Mediator at UNESCO. He is the Co-Chair of the Ethics Committee of the World Academy of Biomedical Technologies (WABT) and member of the Scientific Committee of the International Society of Bioethics (SIBI).
Since 1996, he teaches a Master’s seminar in bioethics and biotechnologies (University of Paris-South, University of Versailles and University of Paris XII).
He is the author of several articles, essays, reports and publications on social anthropology, human rights issues, bioethics and the ethics of science.
